We all experience anxiety—but what is it? And what do we do about it when it feels like anxiety takes control?
This is not a self-help post, but the beginning of a series on anxiety.
Lately, I’ve been diving deeply into Scripture and the tradition of Eastern Orthodoxy to explore anxiety. I found an ocean full of results. Frankly, it’s more than a little overwhelming. I feel lost at sea.
And I’ve been studying and practicing counseling for several years now, with a specialization in cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety! If I feel out to sea, how much more might others?
Plus, there are so many messages in the culture about anxiety, not to mention drug-company advertisements. And then there is whatever we hear from counselors and social media over the years. How do we find the center of truth about anxiety?
Just like explorers who find a treasure chest on the seabed, the best way to work through the all the rich scriptural and patristic plunder—and gain the payoff with practical application for everyday folk and find that center—is to examine our findings on anxiety piece by piece.
Here is a gem; there is a string of gems! Here is a gold piece; there is a gold bar!
